Susan Isla Tepper

The Letter

All goodwill gone

to hell once they entered

the trenches

Bombs dropping

like birthday balloons

stuck with pins.

I have your last letter

he told my mother

when he was home

on safe ground.

He said in the filth of

it all—

the poison gas

the blood of the dead

and wounded

Came a sudden burst of hope

that wasn’t there before

he got her letter.

  1. Excellent writing here, spare, economical words act like. a jolt upon consciousness. Superb poem.
