Al

Al lived in a particular strand of alternate reality.  This was a lane of reality that contained no other alternative realities.  It contained no dreams, no expectations, no imagination, no memories, imperfect or otherwise.  The only reality that Al had was the one of the moment.

Al was a goldfish.  And he was very happy to be a goldfish swimming in the here and now -- because no other possibility occurred to him.
But once he was gone, joining the afterlife,  Al experienced a kaleidoscope of hundreds of dimensions,  each bursting forth in color and in melody in multiple directions.  Such were the rewards of being a goldfish with a mono-directional origin which later served him so well.

The dam burst

The dam burst. The valley was filled by a rapidly tumbling, rising tide of sleep. Everyone, everything was covered in dreams. Slowly, this too trickled away, and everyone awoke. Some were invigorated, some confused, others raging with hangovers. Even though dry and clear-eyed now, all had been soaked to their core and forever impacted from their submergence in the vast valley of dreams.
